Looking for a local retreat to help you establish, maintain, or deepen contemplative practices? This spring, experienced yoga and meditation instructors Christine Clardy and Marjorie Ames offer a thoughtfully structured afternoon in which you can feed your need for (or curiosity about) intentional silence. The lovely, light-filled Fairfax Studio will host this half-day workshop, which includes gentle, guided movement as well extended periods of meditation and mindfulness. A sound healing session wraps up the day, using the bright resonance of gong, chimes, and crystal bowls to help us access the fullness of spring’s renewal. This retreat is accessible for all whether you are new to meditation or have an established practice. Join us in this afternoon of sustenance for mind, body and spirit during one of nature’s most inspiring times of year.

Christine Clardy

Christine’s classes emphasize healthy, individualized physical alignment and breath awareness, as well as finding balance between effort and ease. Throughout the practice, personal inquiry and internal listening remain key. Yoga becomes an ongoing cultivation of “skill in action” as it helps unify the body, mind and heart. Whether planning for individuals, groups, teens or families, she enjoys exploring classic age- and body-appropriate asana even while adding modern exercise theory, games, teamwork, and relaxation techniques to the experience. Christine has an M.A. in American Literature and an M.A. in Religious Studies. Her RYT200 comes through Sun & Moon (2018) and she received the RYT500 designation from Yandara Yoga Institute (2024). In addition to having taught middle and high school English, Chris is trained in Love Your Brain Yoga, Move with Me Yoga Adventures, and as a Family Peer Recovery Specialist through the Richmond Behavioral Health Authority. She is certified with the Veterans’ Yoga Project. Her meditations are informed by Tara Brach and Jack Kornfield’s rich teachings, and further supported by her intensive 100-hour certification in Pranayama & Meditation. Most recently, she completed 100-hour training for Yoga Nidra Resonance, a healing modality that employs meditation and sound healing. Chris came to yoga in 1995 as a young and busy professional, having no interest in its traditions or techniques. She simply liked feeling relaxed! Over time, however, yoga has become different things, seemingly able to morph into whatever she needs whenever she needs it. Today, she still likes feeling relaxed—but also eagerly explores the vast system of traditions and techniques that she once overlooked.

Marjorie Ames

Marjorie Ames began practicing yoga in 1989 and has taught at Sun and Moon since 2018. A career diplomat who retired recently, she brought her yoga practice with her and benefitted from the experience of many extraordinary teachers during her assignments abroad. At Sun & Moon she has found a supportive and welcoming community of inspiring teachers and students. Marjorie participated in Sun and Moon’s 2016-17 Foundations In-Depth Teacher Training Program and received her 200-hour certification in 2019. She is currently completing Sun and Moon's 300-hour Dharma program. In August 2023, she received a Yin / Insight Yoga Primary Level Training certification from the Sarah and Ty Powers Insight Yoga Institute. She is also an accredited teacher of Yoga For Healthy Aging, having completed the training in that specialization offered by Baxter Bell, MD, 500-ERYT and Melina Meza, B.S.N., 500-ERYT in August 2020.

Marjorie is also an experienced practitioner of Reiki, and received her Second Degree certification in the Usui System of Natural Healing (Usui Shiki Ryoho) in November 2017. She offers individual Reiki sessions as part of Sun and Moon's Wellness Collective at the Studio in Arlington.

Her yoga teaching approach is informed by the interplay between movement, breath, and the energetic level of experience. She regularly offers workshops on mindfulness and meditation that integrate gentle or restorative movement with contemplative practices. She believes passionately that yoga is for every body and encourages students to listen to their own wisdom and be curious about what is happening moment by moment. Her classes integrate meditative moments and longer holds in yoga shapes with mindful movement.
